Short-term Programs
Do I need a Study Permit for my ESL or short-term program?
You do not require a Study Permit if your program length is 6 months or shorter. You can enter and remain in Canada on your Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa or Electronic Travel Authorization) and study for upto 6 months.
If your program is longer than 6 months in duration, you need to apply for a Study Permit.
Study Permit vs. Study Visa
What's the difference between a Study Permit and a Student Visa?
A Study Permit is a document that is issued upon your initial entry to Canada as a student. This permit allows you to study and stay in Canada as a student until the expiry date on the study permit. If you are unable to complete your studies within the authorized time, you must maintain your student status by submitting a study permit extension application before it expires. This permit does not allow you to enter Canada.
A Visa, formally called a Temporary Resident Visa, is a counterfoil in your passport. The visa allows you to enter Canada. It does not allow you to study in Canada. If you apply for your Study Permit from outside Canada, a TRV will be processed with your study permit application. You do not need to apply for a visa separately.
If you are from a visa-exempt country, you do not need a visa, instead you need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter Canada. eTAs are always issued with a study permit application. You do not need to apply for an eTA separately.
