Sponsor Eligibility

Who can become a sponsor?

To be eligible to become a sponsor, you must be:

  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Living in Canada (Canadian citizens and permanent residents ) or intend to return to Canada after the application is finalized (Canadian citizens)

  • Prove you are not receiving social assistance - except for disability.

Previous sponsorship undertaking, bankruptcy, criminal records and other criteria may make you ineligible to become a sponsor.

Open Work Permit Eligibility

Can my partner work in Canada while their permanent residence application is being processed?

If your spouse or common-law partner has applied under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class, they are eligible to apply for an open work permit while they wait for their permanent residence application to be finalized. They must be living with you in Canada to be eligible.

An acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) letter for the permanent resident application is required to be eligible to apply for the Open Work Permit. The AOR must be for the PR application stage - not the sponsorship application stage.

Dependent Child

Is my child a dependent?

A dependent child is:

  • Your child or your spouse/common-law partner's dependent child.

  • Under 22 years old

  • Not married - does not have a spouse or common-law partner

Dependent children that are 22 years or older may qualify if they have financially depended on their parents and are unable to support themselves financially due to a mental or physical condition.
